Creating an inclusive classroom environment
- You created a friendly and open environment that I felt comfortable to be myself in which supported my learning. Basically continue being personable with your students – I loved this course with you.
- I grew to really like and appreciate the small group discussions we had daily. These provided many different perspectives and I felt comfortable to share / contribute my ideas during these activities.
- I also really liked the learning style that the instructor implemented. She accepted a lot of new ideas and even expanded upon them which helped me a lot when actually learning the material.
- She was really nice and always came into class with a smile. This was probably my favorite class of the semester in large part due to the way she taught. She prioritized discussion and the emergence of new ideas rather than just preaching the course to us. The grading structure was also a huge bonus. It really helped me to actually focus on the text and my interpretation of it rather than me having to worry about what the professor wants me to write.
Offering active and innovative in-class learning activities
- I really enjoyed the variety that was incorporated in the class. We always did different group projects every class period which always made it exciting.
- The aspects of the course that were most useful to my learning were the numerous opportunities to practice what was expected of us before we were graded on said work.
- The open-ended discussion and questions that were focused on just getting students to talk and think about the texts in general rather than force conversation in one direction or another
- English was always my least favorite subject in school, and I even contemplated becoming an English teacher out of spite for how generally unenjoyable they were for me, even as a solid enough writer. This course, which was my first english-related course in college, was my favorite course I took this entire *year*, and it was something I looked forward to, which was an amazing change of pace.
Providing timely and effective responses to improve student work and performance
- Really good feedback, always willing to help and clarify, went above and beyond for students

- I really liked the fact that the line of communication between instructor and student was always there.
- My instructor gave great feedback on even the smallest assignments.
- The teacher was extremely flexible with deadlines, and oered personalized feedback for almost every assignment which I really appreciated
Supporting students’ writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills through focused discussions and assignments
- Assignments were simple and easy to understand but still challenging
- I’ve really enjoyed taking this course the past semester. My favorite section was the rhetorical analysis section which I still somewhat think about in everyday life currently.
- I liked reading multiple books and different types of literature throughout the course, because I felt like they were different types of books I haven’t read in my life before. I also feel like the topics of some of the books are important in learning about, so I thoroughly enjoyed the books that we read in this class.
- The small and large group discussions that facilitated critical thinking of the texts that we read.
Demonstrating genuine concern for students’ learning and holistic wellbeing
- You also did a good job guiding in our work by being very helpful and easy to come to with questions.
- I really enjoyed having Sarah as my teacher for this class! She was super understanding and flexible, and really wanted us to succeed in this class!
- Sarah Barringer was a wonderful teacher who was always willing to help and meet with me to discuss assignments. She is very kind and understanding when life sometimes gets in the way of assignments, and she worked with me to ensure I was in good standing with the class. I would love to take one of her classes again.
